Autumn seminar theme: From Dissertation to Working Life
What role can a dissertation play in your career? How can research support your career and working life?
The seminar "From Dissertation to Working Life" explores the transition from PhD research to professional careers in and outside academia. The seminar aims to support doctoral candidates and recent graduates in navigating the shift from PhD work to practical and academic applications, highlighting the skills, challenges, and opportunities involved in this journey.
The speakers in the seminar have had an interesting and diverse academic career since completing their dissertations. Come join us to explore the role of real-world situations where their research background has played an important role.

About the speakers
Päivi Myllykangas is the Executive Director of the C. V. Åkerlund Media Foundation, which supports media research, renewal, and professional development in Finland. She earned her PhD in Business Studies from the University of Tampere in 2009 with a dissertation titled “Stakeholder Relationships in Business Value Creation – From Service Unit to Business: Episodes in the Life of a Company.” The dissertation can be found here: https://trepo.tuni.fi/handle/10024/66434.

Akram Hatami is an Adjunct Professor at the Oulu Business School, University of Oulu. Her research explores how human beings can be placed at the center of sustainability discourse. Drawing on postmodern philosophy, she examines the idea of the individual as a social construct and approaches ethics as a continuous learning process through which identity is formed. She earned her PhD in Business Studies from the University of Oulu in 2020 with a dissertation titled “Keep Others in Mind: A Way to Proceed with Ethical Decisions Under Uncertainty.” The dissertation can be found here: https://oulurepo.oulu.fi/handle/10024/36568
