Can Environmental Responsibility and Digitalization Go Hand in Hand? (28.8.2026)
Many organizations are undergoing rapid change. Digitalization is transforming how organizations operate, which can be seen in the growing use of digital services, such as cloud computing and artificial intelligence. These technologies seem tempting, as they bring new business opportunities and efficiency gains.
However, less attention is paid to the other side of the coin: electronic waste, data centers, and growing energy demands remind us that digitalization can also contribute to environmental challenges rather than simply alleviating them (Hameed et al., 2023). Organizational leaders must therefore consider not only what technology can achieve but also its environmental costs.

Environmental Leadership as a Driver of Change
Environmental leadership is necessary to ensure that technological development aligns with both environmental goals and long-term business success. Environmental leaders actively drive organizational changes by implementing practices such as monitoring environmental impacts and designing production processes that reduce waste (Zhang & Ma, 2021).
Additionally, it helps shape organizational values, allocate resources, and create conditions that encourage green innovation (Su et al., 2020; Mady et al., 2023). In doing so, environmental leaders help align business objectives and ecological goals so that they support rather than compete with one another. This raises an important question: can investments in environmentally responsible digital technologies create a lasting competitive advantage?
Green Information Technology: More Than Energy-Efficient Technology
Green information technology is one example of environmentally responsible digital technologies. It is often associated with reducing technology’s environmental footprint by lowering energy consumption and extending the lifespan of devices. Its potential also extends beyond such efficiency improvements. Green information technology and related information systems can help organizations redesign processes, such as reducing resource use, and developing new solutions to environmental challenges (Chen & Roberts, 2024).

Can Environmental Leadership Create Competitive Advantage?
While digitalization presents organizations with opportunities, environmental responsibility is sometimes viewed as a cost that can reduce competitiveness. Environmental leadership helps address this tension by reframing sustainability into a source of strategic advantage. Research increasingly suggests that sustainability can drive innovation and create value (Su et al., 2020). Organizations that integrate digital technologies with sustainability practices are also better positioned for competitive advantage (Hameed et al., 2023; Hanif et al., 2023).
Ultimately, sustained competitive advantage is not driven by digital technologies alone, but by how organizations integrate digitalization with environmental leadership. By allocating resources to sustainability initiatives and encouraging experimentation with environmentally responsible technologies, environmental leaders can create conditions that support green information technology innovation. The question is no longer whether digitalization and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand, but how organizations can transform their integration into a source of innovation.
